Enjoying the segue from observer to advocate

Thanks for doing such a great job on Sime’s site. It's really wonderful to be able to see what's going on with the old gang.

The Danielses had a fine 2004, thanks for asking. My big achievement was making partner at my law firm, now named Mazursky, Schwartz, Daniels & Bradley. My practice is in Westwood, CA and focuses on complex litigation, insurance bad faith and catastrophic personal injury, meaning I'm a plaintiff's trial lawyer. I also helped launch an annual symposium on the civil justice system at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, which was my major "egghead" accomplishment for the year.

Come to think of it, 2004 was fine, excepting for the November election, but that's a whole different topic.

My wife Cheryl (we were married while I was at the Daily, invited the whole editorial staff and made a big splash with our "open bar") and I have two children, Billy and Jenny. Billy is a freshman at Crespi High School in Encino, CA, Jenny is a seventh grader at Chaminade Jr. High in Chatsworth, CA.

Jenny is a fine scholar and wants to be a veterinarian; Billy is more like his dad, less of an all-around student but doing well in honors English and getting by.

Cheryl retired from her accounting job at Disney three or so years ago, so she is a stay-at-home mom. However, we are trying to find some way to put her MBA education to good use, so there's talk of starting some kind of business to supplement the law practice.

I write regular articles for attorney association magazines, mostly lofty, scholarly stuff about what the law is in a certain obscure area and things like that.

I bought an Apple laptop that I love. I built a home office and can often be found hunkered over my oak roll top desk plotting the conquest of this or that. My power tool collection now rivals that of most general contractors in the Southern California area.

I am learning to play the guitar and am collecting "antique" music, mostly 19th-century songs from the American West and South, because, well, I like that kind of stuff.

Oh, and we still keep lots of animals on our little ranch in the San Fernando Valley (which we bought and built while I was at the Daily). The current count is two horses, two goats, four dogs, four cats, two rats, one snake, two roosters and a bunch of hens.

I don't really miss "the business" that much. But I do miss the old Variety days, because that was a great crew I was privileged to work with back when the world was young.
